Anorexia
& Bulimia - We Can Help!
Anorexia:
Anorexia is a disorder where someone is not
eating enough to sustain themselves. Quite
literally, they are starving themselves.
She/he may not truly understand the way their
body appears to others and may feel
"fat" no matter how their body
looks. People who suffer from this disorder
may deceive others into believing they are
eating well. They may "play" with
their food more than eat it. Overall, anorexic
eating behavior is a dysfunctional attempt to
gain control over your life through the
control and restriction of food - it can
become quite serious and life threatening.
Bulimia:
Bulimia is a similar disorder to anorexia,
however, the person eats regularly but forces
themselves to "throw up" so that
they do not gain weight. These folks also have
trouble seeing themselves as they truly are
and are looking for ways to control their
lives. Patients can fluctuate between bulimic
and anorexic behaviors to over control their
weight.
Treatment:
Treatment for these disorders frequently
involves a number of professionals to help the
patient regain control over their lives.
Included in any form of treatment is
psychological, medical, nutritional and social
support. Frequently, once a patient is
diagnosed with an eating disorder, a
psychologist or physician organizes a team to
work with the patient. You can expect to be
involved in individual psychotherapy, group
therapy, family involvement, medical
management, and nutritional counseling.
